How I pick the movies to write about here:

  • These are the movies linger with me after I watched them.

  • Sometimes I go back to watch them again, and I always feel something.

  • They touch me at a level that is not quite speakable, yet I want to write and capture that. (Isn’t that what’s fun with writing?)

  • I’m not giving them ratings. And naturally, there will be spoilers though I try to avoid them.

The Great Beauty
Paolo Sorrentino, 2013

“As the light flashes, love sits at the corner
Shy and distracted it was…
And that’s why we can tolerate life no longer” — Jep Gambardella

As the light flashes, the heart is drawn out into the air
It floats, it attaches, it is mesmerized by beauty
Can you capture beauty? Can you capture life?

Casablanca
Michael Curtiz, 1942

“We will always have Paris.” — Rick Blaine

Who’s to say what’s a sacrifice, or if it’s big or small?
Who’s to say a song is not an act of rebellion?
A city where passion remains, becomes where courage meets hope.
