A Study of the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards
Carl Jung on tarot: “They are psychological images, symbols with which one plays, as the unconscious seems to play with its contents. They combine in certain ways, and the different combinations correspond to the playful development of events in the history of mankind.” [source: Carl Jung and Tarot by Mary K. Greer]
I take a similar view to Jung in the sense that I believe tarot cards represent an intriguing way of understanding the subconscious, and more. The subconscious operates beneath the conscious—what our senses capture, how we act, what we think. The subconscious communicates in a different language, in the sense that it doesn’t need interpretation, just recognition. When we become aware of it, we have the choice of acknowledging its value, or deeming it untrustworthy. When we respect the subconscious and speak to it, from a place of humbleness, it shares its pointers generously.
The subconscious traverses beyond time, and it is nonlinear—which is why a tarot reading can be effective at predicting the future. This mystic power can be mishandled. There is danger in believing that a higher power is responsible for creating our future. In doing so, we shed the responsibilities that we should take on, and as a result, our lives become passive.
Below I write about the twenty-two Major Arcana cards of the Visconti-Sforza tarot deck, which is known as the earliest tarot deck.
The Magician
The Magician prepares to create. A variety of tools are in front of them. The inspiration comes from Above. The creations land Below. An alchemical process awaits. The hands form the creations. They are guided by a combination of the divine inspiration, and hand and mind.
The teaching of The Magician: wait for the divine inspiration, prepare the resources, ready to engage.

The High Priestess
The High Priestess speaks mystery. There is something about her. It is not to be revealed.
What she offers is wisdom. The wisdom comes from a place that is hidden. It is not to be spoken. And when it is spoken, it becomes a diluted message that people hang onto. They think it is a divination. They think it is a sign. They think…
In High Prietess’s presence we feel, we remain in silence.

The Empress
The Empress…
The Fool
The Fool represents courage. He is stepping into the unknown. He is prepared, or is he? Anyway, he is stepping into the unknown. He is stepping into a new beginning. Beginnings are exciting. Beginnings are scary. Beginnings teach us to be humble. Beginnings teach us to be expect the worst, the best, and everything in between.
The Fool does not travel empty-handed. He has companions. They help him to remain balanced.
